About Gavin Williamson
Gavin Williamson was first elected as the Member of Parliament for South Staffordshire in 2010 and reelected with an increased majority on 2015. Gavin was appointed to several Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) roles within his first few years in parliament, most notably to Patrick McLoughlin as Secretary of State for Transport and then he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister David Cameron in October 2013. Gavin played a key role in the election of Theresa May as Prime Minister and was appointed the Government Chief Whip in Theresa May's new Government in July 2016. The Chief Whip is responsible for administering the whipping system that ensures that MPs attend and vote in Parliament as the party leadership desires. Gavin was born in Scarborough in 1976. He went to Raincliffe Comprehensive School and Scarborough Sixth Form College. He gained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Bradford. After graduation, Gavin began a career in manufacturing, successfully turning around a struggling pottery in Staffordshire. He then became the Managing Director of an architectural design firm which has been involved in the design of many schools, public sector and commercial buildings. He has been a County Councillor and stood in the 2005 general election for the seat of Blackpool North and Fleetwood.
